About Us

The West Bengal Judicial Academy [WBJA], a training establishment of the High Court at Calcutta, is dedicated to judicial education and capacity building for judicial officers and other stakeholders serving in West Bengal as well as the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Established on 28th February 2005, the WBJA functions under the overall guidance of the Hon’ble Judges’ Committee constituted for the Academy, with the Hon’ble Chief Justice of the High Court at Calcutta serving as its Chief Patron. The Academy is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the quality, efficiency, and responsiveness of the judicial officers, thereby contributing meaningfully to the overall administration of justice. The primary objective of training is to continually equip the trainee judges with the legal acumen, ethical values, and practical skills essential for effective adjudication. The Academy aspires to uphold the dignity of the judiciary and strengthen the rule of law by shaping an informed, efficient, and empathetic judicial system.

Location and Facilities

The permanent campus of the West Bengal Judicial Academy which is covering an area of about 5 acres of land is situated at the following address:

B-10, Action Area III, Rajarhat, New Town, Kolkata-700160

It comprises of Office Building (12 storied), Hostel Building, Club House, Group C and Group D Quarters.

Training Imparted

Academy has arranged for Induction Level Training for newly Recruited Judicial Officers since its inauguration. The Induction Level Training is imparted not only to Junior Level Officers in the Grade of Civil Judge (Junior Division) / Judicial Magistrate but also to the Seniors in the rank of District Judge (Entry Level). This apart, Orientation and Refresher Courses for in-service Officers at various levels are also held from time to time. In addition, short term Module Specific Courses and Seminars are held in the Academy. The services of some of the best and eminent Resource Persons including Hon’ble Judges and Experts in various Fields like Medicine, Forensic Sciences, Social Sciences, Management and Law have been utilized for Training the Officers. The in-house Faculty / Directors also act as Resource Persons with special focus on Court Specific Practical Orientation as well as Order and Judgment Writing Exercises. Training in Yoga for Physical fitness as well as Stress Management is also imparted on a daily basis through qualified Yoga Instructors.
