The West Bengal Judicial Academy was formally inaugurated on 3rd December 2005 by the then Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, Mr. Justice Y.K. Sabharwal after its establishment was notified on 28th February, 2005. In view of the recommendation of the First National Judicial Pay Commission and Order of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India passed in All India Judges’Association and Others vs. Union of India and others (2002) wherein the Hon’ble Court had accepted the suggestion of the Law Commission of India in its 117th Report recommending training of all Judges, the Hon’ble High Court at Calcutta had resolved to establish a State Judicial Academy for training of judicial officers at all levels. Till a permanent structure was set up, the Judicial Academy pursuant to a Resolution of the Full Court, began functioning temporarily in the South and North Block Halls in the ground floor as well as in two adjacent flats of the main block in the 3rd Floor of Bijan Bhavan, Salt Lake, Kolkata.

Since the said time, the Academy has been functioning under the authority and guidance of the Hon’ble High Court at Calcutta and has been playing a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of judicial training and legal education and in striving to nurture a judiciary that is well-informed, ethically grounded, and professionally competent.

Subsequently, the Academy moved to a permanent campus on a 5-acre plot at Action Area-III (B-10), Rajarhat, New Town, Kolkata-700160. The inauguration of the permanent campus was made on February 25, 2017 by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose, Judge, Supreme Court of India in the august presence of Mr. Keshari Nath Tripathi, The Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Arun Mishra, Judge, Supreme Court of India as Guest of Honour, Hon’ble Justice Nishita Mhatre, Hon’ble Acting Chief Justice and other dignitaries.

The process of structural enhancement and academic enrichment is an ongoing journey. Today, the West Bengal Judicial Academy stands as a dynamic institution that strives not only to train newly inducted and in-service judicial officers but also to play a key role in continuing legal education, research, and capacity-building initiatives for stakeholders of the judiciary at various levels.

With a vision rooted in excellence and a commitment to justice, the Academy seeks to grow as a centre of excellence in legal learning, reflection, and innovation.
